If you teach students who are on their way to work with babies (even prenatally), young children, their families and caregivers in any of the wide variety of professions that include Early Care and Learning, Home Visiting, Head Start and Preschool, Early Intervention, Clinical Mental Health, Child Welfare, Health Care and many others, we want to collaborate with you.
NYS-AIMH is working to assure that everyone who works with or on behalf of babies, young children, their families and caregivers has the knowledge, skill and experience to provide what children and families deserve.
We are striving to collaborate with Higher Education Institutions and Professional Training Agencies to ensure the promotion of infant and early childhood mental health principles through courses that prepare students from multidisciplinary fields to meet the critical needs of young children and their families.
In a 2018, NYS-AIMH conducted a survey of clinicians across New York State working in a licensed Mental Health clinic. Respondents shared:
- Clinicians need training in the numerous content areas supporting best practices and standards.
- Both undergraduate and graduate degree programs for psychologists, and social workers do not address or prepare clinicians in early childhood development, or infant mental health.
- All survey respondents stated that their undergraduate and graduate education did not prepare them for working with young children and their families.
