Reflective Supervision as a Problem-Solving Tool

Many of the most persistent problems in early childhood programs are not actually the problems they appear to be on the surface. This session introduces reflective supervision as a practical tool for slowing down reactive problem solving and getting to what is actually driving a recurring issue, whether that issue lives with a child, a staff conflict, or a family relationship. Participants will also explore relational intelligence as a professional skill, learning to notice how they land with others and to build trust incrementally over time rather than assuming it.

Who this session is for:

Geared toward supervisors and program leaders who conduct reflective supervision with staff, though it also serves staff who want to bring more intentional reflection into their own problem solving. It works well as a closing session because it ties the practical skills from earlier sessions into a broader reflective practice participants can continue using long after the training ends.

Learning Objectives:

● Distinguish between a presenting problem and the underlying relational or emotional issue driving it.

● Apply a reflective supervision lens to a real problem from participants' own programs in order to generate a more accurate understanding of what is actually happening.

● Practice noticing how personal presence and communication style lands with others.

● Identify one small, concrete action to build trust incrementally with a specific staff member or team.
